French Hospital In Kaboul

I chose to analyze an article on France Culture published on October 13, 2021 about the health system in Afghanistan since the Taliban returned. In this article ''L'hôpital français de Kaboul : soigner coûte que coûte'' written by Valérie Crova we will critize the 3 photos present to complete the information.

To begin, in my opinion, the headline is very explicit, the objective is clear and I can see the determination of the hospital thanks to the kind of slogan at the end of this headline. This headline is a bit exaggerated because it presents the French hospital in Kabul as the solution to all the problems faced by the Afghan people.

Then, concerning the first photo, we see the despair of the families waiting in the crowded corridor of the hospital through the presence in the foreground of women with closed faces. I can see that the women are despondent, in a situation of distress reinforced by the presence of their harmless babies.

I think this photo illustrates the crisis and poverty because the people are trapped and this has repercussions on their health, which is put to the test. I think the editor chose to take a clear but very exaggerated image to appeal to the reader. To emphasize this sense of poverty and cry for help, there are photos of women with their happy children in the background, reflecting a strong contrast with the reality that is clearly before our eyes.

The second photo (which shows the medical director (Bashir) of the hospital in the foreground) is in total contradiction with the previous one and highlights a serene man, presented as the "hero" of the situation.

In the background, a woman with her child looks at the doctor as if admiring him. From a personal point of view, I think that this photo aims to put forward the hospital as the solution to all the problems encountered by the habitants thanks to this effect of opposition between the message of the previous photo and that of this one.

Finally, the article ends with a photo showing a couple waiting for their turn with two children in their arms. Once again, there are signs of despair and sadness, especially through the position, the clothes and the bare feet of the woman. I find the photo well chosen because the eyes are turned towards the woman embodying poverty and suffering allowing to denounce once again the crisis situation in Afghanistan.

To conclude, in my opinion, the article starts with a pejorative lexical field imaging : pain, distress, despair, crisis, ... to give hope with the second image : positivity, joy, solutions, ... and ends with an image plunging the reader back into poverty.
